Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2005, my journey has been physically and mentally challenging. Along the way, I've had the privilege to meet some amazing people, including fellow INVICTUS athletes who inspire me with their resilience. There have certainly been highs and lows, but I’ve learned that maintaining a positive attitude enables me to adapt to anything life throws my way. Above all, the unwavering support from my incredible family and the veteran support community has been invaluable.
After a successful career as a veteran in the Army with The Royal Green Jackets (later known as The Rifles), I was medically discharged due to Multiple Sclerosis in December 2017. It has been a challenging journey, but with the unwavering support of my family, friends, and various veteran support networks, along with a positive outlook (which isn't always easy!), I have been able to lead a full, independent, and rewarding life. Yes, there are tough moments for all of us, but there is so much to be grateful for. Since my diagnosis, I have been incredibly fortunate to engage with numerous charities and sporting adventures, including my experiences as an INVICTUS athlete. This is my chance to share some of these experiences with you. When my wife asked me what I would do after leaving, I jokingly said 'have a gap year.' Six years later, she is still wondering!! I find that the best way to document this journey is through the photos I've taken since my diagnosis and by creating a blog—what could possibly go wrong!!!!
When not providing veteran support and working with UK Veterans, spending quality time with my family is my top priority – 'We all live with Multiple Sclerosis'. I have been fortunate to be part of Team UK as an INVICTUS athlete in the Sydney INVICTUS Games 2018 and again for the 2022 Games at The Hague. It has been incredible, and I feel so lucky! Training for these events has given me a strong focus and purpose. In short, sport recovery has been an essential part of my daily management of my symptoms, and I thoroughly recommend it to everyone.
Often found on the sidelines with other families watching our children playing sport, I find it is an inclusive community. As an INVICTUS athlete, I appreciate that we are never judged, making it a great place to relax and 'chew the cud'! I continue to pursue adaptive sport, including sailing, skiing, hand biking, swimming, archery, and more, and I am always willing to try something new. Photography has become my latest hobby. However, I now find great reward in supporting others, especially fellow veterans living with Multiple Sclerosis, and sharing my journey through storytelling - the power of social value! It’s seriously powerful and therapeutic.
